About Us
Our Mission

To ensure that everything we do makes life better for people living with sight loss in Dorset, and their families.

Our background

Established in 1918 under the name Dorsetshire County Association for the Care of the Blind (DCAB), our roots are firmly planted in the goal to assist veterans returning from the war, who faced challenges due to injuries affecting their sight. Over the years, our organisation has evolved, adapted, and expanded its services to become the Dorset Blind Association in 2004.

In 2004, we underwent a significant transformation, changing our name and embracing a broader vision for the future. Since then, we have pioneered a mobile equipment service, demonstrating specialist aids and equipment in people’s homes and now provide a number of community-based services that cater to the evolving needs of our members.

Our goal has remained consistent; to help individuals adapt to sight loss, promoting functional independence, personal safety, and active community participation.

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) stands as the pinnacle recognition for UK volunteer groups, recognising exceptional contributions done by volunteer groups in their communities. In 2017, Dorset Blind Association proudly received this prestigious award, a testament to the exceptional efforts of our volunteers.

Equivalent to an MBE, QAVs represent the highest honour given to local voluntary groups in the UK, and it comes with a lifetime acknowledgement. This award not only celebrates the dedication of our volunteers but also reflects positively on the small, dedicated staff team at Dorset Blind Association who manage, motivate, and steer our volunteers with unwavering commitment.
