Unique Dining in the Dark Experience

We are teaming up with catering students at Bournemouth and Poole College to provide a unique Dining in The Dark experience at Escoffier Restaurant and Coastline Brassiere on Thursday 21st March. Our exclusive event is returning for its third year and offers an exciting opportunity to test the senses with an indulgent six-course meal in very low light conditions, which aims to simulate dining with a visual impairment.

Guests will be treated to a surprise six-course meal with the opportunity to enhance their dining experience by being completely blindfolded, to experience something near what it’s like for people with total sight loss.

The novel fundraiser was successful in its previous years, and has been brought back by Dorset Blind Association to celebrate its 100th year of serving the community.

Gareth Owens, Community and Corporate Fundraiser said, ‘“Support from the local community is very important to us here at Dorset Blind Association and we are very grateful for the kind support of Bournemouth and Poole College and Escoffier Restaurant. Events like this give us a great chance to raise the profile of our charity within the local community, increasing the awareness of sight loss and also promoting fundraising opportunities.”

Tickets for this special event are £37.50 per person and should be booked in advance. Arrivals from 6:30pm to be seated by 7:00pm; the evening should finish by 9:30pm. Upon booking, please advise of any dietary requirements.

New for 2019: Bright for Sight Night Run is coming to Weymouth!

Our Bright for Sight Night Run, sponsored by Friths Opticians, is set to light up Weymouth seafront on Saturday 13th April! Our well loved fun run that usually takes place along Boscombe seafront has become so successful, that we are expanding the event to become county wide. Discount offer of two entries for just £20 is available until 31st January, for our fun run along Weymouth Seafront. We hope you will join us in the first ever Bright for Sight Night Run in Weymouth!

The fun run is open to all ages and abilities, so bring along the whole family and walk, run or even skip along the route, wearing your brightest clothing, neon paint, glow sticks or even fairy lights and help make Weymouth’s first ever Bright for Sight Night Run the brightest run yet!

The night will begin with a Zumba warm up courtesy of local Zumba Heat Fitness Instructor Lou Sams, getting the runners pumped up and ready to glow! Entry is only £15 per person which includes an exclusive ‘Bright for Sight’ medal and a runners goody bag.  Group discount is available to groups of 4 or more at just £12 per person. The run will start at 8.30pm, with registration opening at 7:30pm.

Helena Sinclair, Events Fundraiser at Dorset Blind Association said: “We are extremely excited to bring the Bright for Sight Night Run to Weymouth, following on from its popularity in Boscombe. We hope that the event will raise additional support and vital awareness in the local community for sight loss and the ever growing need for our services.”

We are encouraging runners to raise sponsorship for their 5k or 10k challenge to support them in their 100th year. Commit to raising just £100 in sponsorship and enable 20 vulnerable people to be visited in their homes by our caring volunteers.

Charity of the Year Donation

We were delighted to be chosen to be Crossways Travel’s ‘Charity of the Year’ in 2018.  The local Coach Tour Operator, based near Dorchester, recently made a very generous donation of £2114.16 to us, raised with the help of their local customers. The company operating day excursions and Holiday Tours from Dorset, invited us along to their annual Christmas Party Lunch to present the cheque on Thursday 20th December.

Matthew Crocker, owner of Crossways Travel said, “We are delighted with the amount raised this year for the charity and we are pleased to see that Dorset Blind Association were very grateful for the generous support of our customers.”

Support from local businesses is very important to us here at Dorset Blind Association and we are very grateful for the kind support of Crossways Travel. Financial support is always greatly received as we don’t receive any government funding, but there is also the added exposure we get which helps to introduce us to more people who could benefit from our help. We always hope to be selected as businesses ‘Charity of the Year’ as it is a fantastic opportunity that greatly benefits us.

New Year’s resolution to get fit? Raise funds and support sight loss while doing so!

Is it your New Year’s resolution to get fit and shed that extra Christmas weight? If so, we are running our annual Fitness February Challenge, encouraging the general public and supporters to take on a month-long fitness challenge raising funds for, and awareness of, the charity. Now in its fourth year, we have introduced a new set of FREE fitness challenges to take on, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle for all. We believe that sight loss should not mean missing out and actively encourage our members to take part in social activities to keep fit and reduce isolation.

There are three fitness challenges as part of the Fitness February campaign, encouraging supporters to walk, run or cycle the full / half / quarter distance of Dorset in the 28 days of February – with the shortest challenge requiring just 0.8 miles a day!

Leah Cross, Community Support Worker at Dorset Blind Association, has taken part in the Fitness February Challenge in previous years, saying: “ I think Fitness February is a great chance for anyone to take up exercise. Whether you’re into fitness or not, I know how important the need for Dorset Blind Association is as I see it firsthand.”

We hope that in people signing up to the Fitness February Challenge, they will raise awareness for the charity across the county, as well as vital funds, with the suggested sponsorship target being just £50. With no government funding or support from the RNIB, the charity relies 100% on the generosity of its supporters.

Dorset Blind Association provides various services and practical help for blind and partially sighted people across the whole of Dorset where there are currently more than 30,000 people living with sight loss. This number is predicted to increase every year and is expected to reach 35,000 in 2020, causing an even bigger increase in demand for the much-needed services and support.

Gareth Owens, Community and Corporate Fundraiser at Dorset Blind Association, said: “At DBA we are all about the people: our central belief is that sight loss should not be a barrier to people living full and active lives, so it makes sense for us to champion a challenge like Fitness February.”

We need your help this Christmas!

We are aiming to make the lives of our members happier this Christmas by continuing to provide the vital 25 social and activity clubs across the county. The clubs provide over 450 blind and partially sighted people with much needed friendships and peer support to relieve isolation and prevent loneliness.

Almost two-thirds of people registered blind or partially-sighted never or rarely go out, causing loneliness and depression. Our social clubs have a huge impact upon the lives of the people who use them, promoting independence, well being and an active lifestyle, while significantly reducing loneliness and depression. 4/5 of the charities social club members agree that they feel less isolated as a result of attending the social clubs.

Jess, a visually impaired member from the charities’ Poole Lighthouse group said “Dorset Blind Association’s Poole Lighthouse club has helped me talk about my sight loss, it is nice to be around people who experience similar things and to make a lot of friends.”

We have been selected to take part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s largest online match funding scheme, once again this year to try and raise the £15,000 required to fund the social clubs throughout 2019. We hope to achieve this through public donations, that will be DOUBLED during the week of the 27th November to 4th December as part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2018.

Gareth Owens, Community and Corporate Fundraiser at Dorset Blind Association said:

This is very much a big thing for the charity and could be massive for our service provision. To put it into context: The Big Give can turn £7,500 in online donations into £15,000 which would run all of our social clubs for an entire year”.

We hope it will be an incentive that your donation could be more than doubled during the week following Giving Tuesday, the 27th November and are seeking more kind individuals and supporters to make an online donation during the week of 27th November – 4th December.

If you would like to help keep Dorset Blind Association’s social clubs running, please donate during the week of the 27th November and make a difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people across Dorset this Christmas!
